The last summer in Florida was ridiculously hot and we went through a draught for a while. We lost lots of plants from it so we decided this year to plant differently. Not only do plants cost a lot of money, but you develop a relationship with them so when they die its a loss in many ways. The plants will not be native, but also perineal and drought tolerant. Planting perennials like Mexican Sage Perennial, Purple Coneflower Perennials and Bignonia Tangerine Beauty Perennials. Unlike planting annuals you only need to plant these once, (normally) and they will come back. I then focus on whether they will be drought resistant, plants that will still thrive only being watered once a week. Now the first year you plant them you will need to still establish a healthy root structure by watering it twice a week. After that they should be able to grow strong and beautiful. To replace my Mexican Sage Bushes that just don't seem to like there home I chose for them I choose Lantanas. These are grow to be large shrub that produce lots of different color flowers that butterflies love. Then to replace my Geraniums which completely died from the lack of rain, and to much sun I choose an Pentas plant. These plants are great for butterflies and bees, because they produce lots of pollen on their clusters of flowers. To replace my Ever gold Ornamental grasses which also did not seem to like its home I chose for it, I picked Purslanes and Thyme. Both of these plants spread like crazy so they will cover lots of ground while returning every year.
