I love to do crafts with my kids. It doesn't matter how old they are I always try to find crafts that they will enjoy to make. Having kids ranging in ages from 10 to 16 it can be hard to find things for them both to make. This craft was inspired from a hiking trip that we collected some fallen leaves. I came up with this idea to make Fall Necklaces out of the leaves. People have been making necklaces for as long as humans have been alive. The ancient people wore jewelry made of materials they found in nature like; feathers, bones, shells, leaves, and colored pebbles. They would choose materials that were beautiful at the same time as durable enough that they could be worn without breaking. Archeologists uncovered a necklace made of fish bones in a cave in Monaco that dated around 25,000 years ago. It is believed that hunters wore trophies like teeth, claws, horns, and bones to bring them good luck for the next hunt. They would also wear jewelry as amulets to protect against bad luck and illness. Some found that some of the material gave the wearer magical properties like; fertility, wealth, and love. We will not be using bones, instead, we are using leaves. Our first part of our hike we looked at and discussed why leaves change color when the Sun God begins his slow descent. As the Sun goes down it allows less time for the trees to absorb the chlorophyll which keeps it that bright green color. As the chlorophyll leaves the photosynthesis process changing so that now instead of the carotenoids instead give off deep colors of orange, and yellow. Then on other some other trees instead of carotenoids, they release anthocyanin which gives off that deep red and purple. Leaves are very delicate so when making your necklace you will need to be very careful. Your first step will be to poke very tiny hole in the leaf. Second is to carefully put your rope, twine, through it. Finally tie together at your desired length. “Some of us walk around with a necklace of hope, an armour of sanity, but at the end of the day, they always come off. We reveal our naked, vulnerable, real selves.”

As a mom of three boys who go to public school I started to notice that some things were not being taught in detail so I decided to create lessons for them. Many of these lessons cover science, history and of information about Paganism. I share crafts for the all different holidays and cultures as ways that they can learn and have fun at the same time.
