Why learn about the moon? What makes it so special? Why do people love and worship it? These are all great question and all questions we have asked ourselves at one time or another. I wanted to not only teach my children about the scientific aspect of the moon, but also the magickal as well. So this is lesson is to focus on the science and the magick of the Moon. The Moon is not as old as the Earth which is 4.54 billion years old it is only a mere 4.5 billion years old. It was create when large objects crashed into the Earth and portions of the rocks that came off began orbiting the Earth together. Over time from orbiting around the Sun the heat melted these rocks together they then cooled and became the Moon. All things in the solar system have their own axis and orbits. The Moon orbits the Earth and the Earth orbits the Sun. It takes 29.5 days for the Moon to fully circle the Sun. Since humans have been on the planet Earth we have always honored the Moon and worshiped her. The Moon is a representative of the female energies of the Universe, The Goddess. Different cultures have different names for the Lunar Goddess. Astronomer Galileo Galilei was the first to actually start keeping track of the moon as it went through its phases. Although I am probably sure many before notice it, but with his adaption of the telescope that he was truly able to see it. The Moon phases are what we see when the light from the sun reflecting off of the moon. Since the Earth and the Moon orbit the Sun, the amount of sunlight that hits the face of the moon changes. These shadows create the shape of the Moon change creating the phases. There are eight phases of the moon: New Moon- This is when the moon facing the Earth is not lite, because instead it is out during the day. It appears dark, and this is the time when we magickally put our energies for new projects and seeking balance. Waxing Crescent- This is directly after the New Moon and is when the Moon is beginning to appear. As it slowly starts to appear this is when we use magick to focus on a specific energy we would like to bring into our lives. First Quarter- Now the Moon is 1/2 visible us to see, we use this time to visualize overcoming any obstacles that are in our way at this time. Waxing Gibbous- The Moon is almost completely visible and appears as a sliver of of darkness. Magickally we ask for patience so we can reach our goals that we set for ourselves. Full Moon- This is when the Moon is fully illuminated and is shining bright in the sky. This is one of the most sacred magickal times. This is when we take the time to honor the Goddess in her entirety. Waning Gibbous- We see all but a piece of the moon like in the waxing gibbous. This is a time of releasing all the negative energies in our life. Last Quarter- Like the last quarter before you see 1/2 of the moon, but the opposite half is illuminated. We readjust and find the best way to achieve what we need to magickally at this time. Waning Crescent- Like the waxing crescent moon we see small sliver of the Moon only the opposite side. This is a time of magick resting and relaxation. Now that we have gone over some of the science and the magick of the moon it is time to get the kids involved. I gather two piece of paper one black and one white, glue, and a pen. I have each child trace a circle to represent the moon, in each phase. I then have them glue it in the correct order onto the white piece of paper. I then have them write the energy they would like to manifest for each phase.

As a mom of three boys who go to public school I started to notice that some things were not being taught in detail so I decided to create lessons for them. Many of these lessons cover science, history and of information about Paganism. I share crafts for the all different holidays and cultures as ways that they can learn and have fun at the same time.
