A Journey Into the RiversWeek 1 Day 1 of 3Our Summer Nature Kids program is getting ready to start. These lessons have been specifically planned around our hiking and other family activities we planned over their summer break. With each section I have them watch a short youtube video to about the aspects of the lesson. Most of the state parks in our area are on a rivers edges, which inspired the lesson. The first weeks lesson is about rivers; how they form, what lives in them, and what magickal attributes they have. Let the kids take a moment and come up with some answers. Questions for the kids: WHERE DO RIVERS FIRST FORM? The water that forms a river can come from springs that bubble up from underground, rain, and other sources. When either the spring or rain water or snow fall melts onto an ELEVATED area like a hill, or moutain area it starts to collect into pools. Once enough water has accumulated it starts to form tiny streams called gullies. Then as more water collects it becomes a larger stream, and as more streams connect they then eventually create a river. Questions for the kids: WHY DO SOME STREAMS BECOME RIVERS AND SOME JUST STAY AS GULLIES? Questions for the kids: WHAT HAPPENS AS THE WATER TRAVELS DOWN THE RIVER? As the water travels through the higher elevated points to the flatter areas it picks up rock, sticks and other objects as it flows down. The water flow depends on the slope of the land the steeper it is the faster the water will flow. Overtime as the water travels down it begins to ERODE the ground it flows through. The water cuts through the rocks over time moving boulders out of the way till it eventually travels to creates a flat plain where it slows down. The erosion process takes a long time and the amount of erosion depends on the speed of the water and how much sediments are carried and cut through it. Questions for the kids: NAME AN EXAMPLE OF A PLACE THAT WAS CREATED FROM EROSION BY WATER? Questions for the kids: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE RIVER FLOODS? When large amounts of water from either run off or rain happen the river floods. When the river floods the water spreads out over the river banks for not only feet but miles. When the water spreads it brings up with it the SEDIMENT from the river bottom. As the sediment spreads out it is makes the surrounding areas smoother, eventually eroding they area to make it flatter over time. This sediments creates a thick layer of rich soil for plant life to flourish. HOMEWORK: Right a paragraph on your observations from our hike at the river must include scientific information.

As a mom of three boys who go to public school I started to notice that some things were not being taught in detail so I decided to create lessons for them. Many of these lessons cover science, history and of information about Paganism. I share crafts for the all different holidays and cultures as ways that they can learn and have fun at the same time.
