We had scheduled to go to the Cherokee Georgia Pow Wow, but unfortunately we were unable to go this year. I still wanted to do a homeschooling lesson on the Cherokee people. The Cherokee Native American tribe they lived in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia. The Cherokee got their name from the Muskogean Tribe it is word that means "speakers of another language". This is because they spoke Iroquoian not Creek which the Muskogee spoke. The Cherokee called themselves the Ani-Yunwiya, meaning "principal people" although they later came to accept the name Cherokee. The people of this tribe hunted turkey, bear, and deer. They also farmed all sorts of vegetables like, squash, corn, and beans. The Cherokee would use these to make stews and other types of food to feed the people. The Cherokee built their homes out of mud and grass on top of a tree log framing. The roofs were made of thatch or bark. They were called daub homes. The Cherokee were very spiritual people they believed in spirits, but they did not have an organized religion. They called about spirits to help before battle, to improve their harvest, and most importantly to heal. The Cherokee relied on Shamans, spiritual leaders to look after their tribe. The Cherokee nation is the largest of the Native American Nation. Every village of about 50 were part of a subdivision of the Cherokee. There were seven clans; Blue Clan, Long Hair Clan, Bird Clan, Paint Clan. Deer Clan , Wild Potato Clan, Wolf Clan. They are all run by a matrilineal society, which means that the woman are in power. They first came in contact with the Europeans was in early May of 1540, and it was with the Spanish, Hernando de Soto. He and his army destroyed everything in there way in pursuit of gold and all sorts of riches. It would be another hundreds till more Europeans would come not to fight, but to trade goods. The Cherokee fought with the French during the Indian War against the British in 1754, but the British won that war. Since they fought against them they lost some of their land as punishment. During the American Revolutionary War they fought with the British against the Colonists only to lose again, losing more land in the process. Less then fifty years later the US government created the Indian Removal Act of 1830 which stated all Native Americans had to forfeit their land. The Cherokee tribe signed a treaty with the United States government which gave all their land to the government for a portion of land in Oklahoma along with $5,000,000. Since not all the Cherokee were happy they stayed in retaliation the US government but President Jackson sent the troops to forcibly remove them. This journey to Oklahoma was called the Trail of Tears over four thousand Cherokee people died in the journey. As of now there 288,500 Cherokee people in America, they are spread out from Oklahoma, North Carolina to Georgia.

As a mom of three boys who go to public school I started to notice that some things were not being taught in detail so I decided to create lessons for them. Many of these lessons cover science, history and of information about Paganism. I share crafts for the all different holidays and cultures as ways that they can learn and have fun at the same time.
