As the world changes, so too do the school system. The first school in the world was the Trivium in Rome, Italy. It was founded in 753 BC by Romulus and Remus, the legendary founders of Rome. The first schools were designed to train children in the skills necessary for their survival. Most boys were taught their father's trade or were apprenticed to learn a trade. While girls were taught the ways of the home. Education started intuitively and naturally, with children learning from their elders through observation, just as animals do. These lessons would prepare them for their future roles in life as adults. The word “school” comes from the Greek scholé, which means “place of leisure”. That’s because people went to school in their spare time. The first school in the world was the Trivium in Rome, Italy. It was founded in 753 BC by Romulus and Remus, the legendary founders of Rome. Several teaching centers popped up in Greece, taught by different philosophers. The school of Isocrates had the philosophy of elocution which is the art of expressing yourself well. There was a variety of teaching centers that specialized in teaching the basic disciplines we have today; like mathematics and science. In ancient Greece, children were educated, but informally, without dividing into grades or classrooms. In medieval Europe, knowledge was restricted to members of the Church and the rich. During the late medieval period, students attending town schools were usually between the ages of seven and fourteen. Instruction for boys in such schools ranged from the basics of literacy such as; the alphabet, syllables, simple prayers, and proverbs. Rather than each family having to teach its children, people realized that it would be more convenient and effective to have a small number of adults instruct a larger group of children. Schools began to be seen as a way to socialize children and teach them how to behave in society. Occasionally, some schools also have taught the Latin language, rudimentary arithmetic, or letter writing and other skills that would have been helpful in business. The Boston Latin School was the first public school opened in the United States, in 1635. To this day, it remains the nation’s oldest public school in operation. Horace Mann, in 1837 argued in favor of government-supported, mandatory education for all children. He created the first Board of Education in Massachusetts and the enactment of the Common School Law. This law required that every town in Massachusetts establish a public school. It was believed that school would transform children into literate, moral, and productive citizens. The primary function of schools at this time was to teach reading so that children learned to read the Bible. Schools also taught Puritan values and other basic information regarding math, reading, and writing. Education tools consisted of slated chalkboards and chalk, as well as a handful of school books. Oral examinations and recitations were a common daily occurrence. A single teacher taught children of all ages and abilities. So, Horace Mann gets credit for being the father of the traditional school system as we know it today. By 1837, training teachers began separating students by age and grade. In 1875 President Ulysses S. Grant created a constitutional amendment to mandate free public schools and prohibit public funding of religious schools. History and geography only emerged between the 19th and 20th centuries. By the late 1900s, the importance of going to school was to develop their academic skills and prepare them for college or university. Many medieval universities were run for hundreds of years as Christian monastic schools where the monks taught classes. The first medieval institutions generally considered to be universities were established in Italy, France, and England in the late 11th and 12th centuries for the study of arts, law, medicine, and theology. One of the oldest and most famous libraries that acted as a university in the east is The House of Wisdom in Baghdad. It was constructed in the 9th century. It held works of astrology, mathematics, agriculture, medicine, and philosophy. Great philosophers would use these to teach their students. The school system has evolved and is constantly changing. As the world changes, so too do the school system. The first public school in the world was the Elizabethan School in England. It was founded in 1578. What is the difference between a public school and a private school? Public schools are funded by the government, while private schools are funded by tuition fees or donations from individuals, grants from the government, and other organizations. Public schools must accept all students, regardless of their ability or financial situation, while private schools can choose who they admit. Public schools are typically larger than private schools, and private schools are more likely to have a religious affiliation. The school system has evolved and is constantly changing. In the mid-70s the multi-grade and aged one-room classes. In the 1980s they started to assess each child by the “national standards” through standardized testing. Over time, the curriculum at schools expanded to include other subjects such as history, science, and literature. The school system has evolved and is constantly changing. As the world changes, so too do the school system. By 1998, almost every state instilled academic standards for math and reading. Principals and teachers were judged by the student's performances. If the students did not perform or retain the information they were promoted or retained. For both teachers and students, this interfered with their actual ability to learn. Who decides the modern curriculum? The curriculum at schools is decided by the school board and the government. They decide which subjects will be taught and how they will be taught. The school board or government decides which subjects will be taught and how they will be taught. In some cases, parents also petition to have certain topics added to the curriculum. Over time, the curriculum at schools expanded to include other subjects such as history, science, and literature. In recent years, there has been a focus on STEAM education (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics). There is also a greater emphasis on critical thinking and problem-solving skills. But, for the most part, the school board or government has the final say on what is taught in school. “Wisdom is not a product of schooling but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it.”

As a mom of three boys who go to public school I started to notice that some things were not being taught in detail so I decided to create lessons for them. Many of these lessons cover science, history and of information about Paganism. I share crafts for the all different holidays and cultures as ways that they can learn and have fun at the same time.
